LIFEGUARD/SWIMMING LESSON INSTRUCTOR (PRIMARILY INDOORS)

JOB INFORMATION

  • Classification: Part-Time II Hourly
  • Pay Range: Pay is determined on an annual basis by the Board of Park Commissioners
  • Supervisor: Works under the general and detailed supervision of the Aquatic Specialist

JOB SUMMARY

Lifeguard will provide public safety and recreational opportunities while enforcing regulations at the BSC Aquatic and Wellness Center. Lifeguard will be responsible for the supervision of the pool facility and assist individuals and groups utilizing the facility and programs within the policies, procedures, and guidelines of the Bismarck Parks and Recreation District (BRPD).

JOB DUTIES AND TASKS

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work to be performed by the individual within this classification. They are not to be considered an exhaustive or all-inclusive listing of the position’s duties and tasks, as they may change or be adjusted, as situations require.

Essential Functions

  • Supervise patrons at all times with thorough knowledge and application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques.
  • Facilitate “Learn to Swim” programs under guidance of the Aquatic Specialist.
  • Maintain and keep records of daily maintenance, locker rooms and facility areas, including cleaning and other duties as assigned.
  • Responsible for water quality testing and reporting irregularities immediately to supervisors.
  • Aid and assist individuals and groups utilizing the facility and programs within the policies, procedures, and guidelines set by BPRD.
  • Attend and participate in all required staff meetings, in-service training and emergency procedure sessions and complete all training session requirements.
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds alone or heavier lifting with assistance.
  • Arrive at scheduled time and be ready to work. Absences must receive prior approval by the Aquatic Specialist.
  • Follow all BPRD safety policies and procedures outlined in the Risk Management Handbook.
  • Complete all necessary payroll forms and utilize the electronic time and attendance timekeeping system.
  • Understand and follow the standard operating procedures outlined in the employee manual.
  • Understand and follow the Human Resource Policy and Procedure Handbook items related to this position.
  • Represent BPRD in a professional and positive manner. BPRD issues clothing and equipment to employees and the issued items are to be used in an appropriate manner, not inconsistent with the image BPRD wishes to convey to the public.

Other Duties and Tasks

  • Establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with facility staff, groups, associations, agencies and individuals.
  • Inform supervisor(s) prior to running out of supplies.
  • Responsible for personal neatness and attire; communicating repair needs and job site neatness.
  • Other duties as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

  • Must be at least 15 years of age.
  • Must have the American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certification, or WSI certification or the ability to receive the certifications before starting work.
  • A current WSI certificate to teach lessons is preferred.
  • The physical ability to operate the pool vacuum, floor scrubber and other pool maintenance equipment.
  • Must be able to physically perform duties required for the position, including the ability to stand for 2-4 hours at a time and lift 30 pounds or heavier lifting with assistance.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and enforce rules and regulations set by the Bismarck Parks and Recreation District with firmness and tactfulness.
  • Must have a flexible schedule as lifeguards/swim lesson instructors are needed to work morning, day, evening, weekend and holiday shifts.
  • Ability to identify potential and current dangerous situations and follow emergency action protocol.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Public contact is frequent.
  • Must be able to stand for 2-4 hours at one time.
  • May also be required to work as a lifeguard/swimming lesson instructor at the outdoor pools.
  • Work is primarily indoors and is subject to frequent interruptions.
